Training Small Pets
Small pets such as mice, hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs can be great additions to any household. The trouble is they can be a little disappointing. After you have finally given in to your children and bought a small pet for them they can often become bored of them quickly. This will lead to you having to nag your children to look after them properly and leaving you with the chore of cleaning out their cages and feeding them. So how can you make them more interesting for your children? Well, believe it or not, you can train these small animals using the click training method.
All sorts of pets can be trained using the click training method. Some animals will learn more quickly than others of course, but the method will be effective on any creature that can be motivated by a treat or attention. Some animals will take longer than others to link the sound of the clicker device to the gaining of the treat, but in most cases plenty of repetition and consistency will do the trick.
Small animals can be taught to do all sorts of unusual and exciting things using click training. They can be taught to touch their nose, jump for balls, roll over and even reach out their paw to shake your hand. The first thing you need to do for it to work is make a link between the click and the reward. The click has to come immediately before you give the reward or the link will not be made. To build towards making a successful trick, such as lifting a paw, you need to click and treat any small movement of the paw. Very gradually over days and weeks you can become more picky about which movement you reward until eventually your pet will raise its paw to shake your hand at the single sound of a click.
Click training is a good way to train any pet. It is good fun and will help you and your children understand your pet more and get more pleasure from them. It is good for the pet to because it is living in a very unnatural environment. The extra activity will stimulate the pet and make it more active and healthy and therefore it will be more interesting to be with. Its new tricks and activities will ensure that your children retain an interest in it and are much more likely to want to look after and care for it.
