postheadericon Factors to Consider While Buying Rabbit Hutches

Rabbits are undoubtedly adorable creatures and make for wonderful pets. However, they can’t be simply kept in small cages. This is because rabbits are active animals—they like to have as much space as possible for playing and running around. Rabbit cages do not provide adequate space to the rabbits. Most cages are also not elevated. This makes them unsafe rabbit homes as predators are able to attack or scare them in absence of any elevation. Therefore, rabbit hutches are important if you are planning to keep one or more rabbits as pets.

There are many factors that you need to take care of while purchasing a rabbit hutch for your pet. To begin with, get a hutch that is as large as possible or, at least, buy a hutch that is large enough for your requirements. If you are keeping an infant rabbit as pet, then the hutch that you buy should be large enough to allow for its growth. If you plan to keep a male and female rabbit in the same hutch, then they may breed. So, you should keep this in mind while deciding the size of the hutch.

Rabbits like to have a home wherein they can feel extremely secure. Rabbits are nervous animals that may develop emotional or physical problems if their shelter is not properly designed to make them feel safe and comfortable. Ideally, their hutch should have two rooms—a playing room and a sleeping room. The playing room should be big and have wire mesh sides to allow for proper ventilation. The sleeping room can be small and should be covered with something opaque from all sides so that the rabbits can retreat to it when feeling scared or threatened.

One other consideration is the outlet for urine and excreta of the rabbits. Some rabbit-owners go for wire mesh flooring and keep the hutch in their lawns so that the excreta of the rabbits can be used as manure for the lawn. But, it is unadvisable to go for wire flooring since it’s not safe for the paws of the rabbits. It is better to have litter boxes instead. They are easy to clean and are a safe solution to the problem of outflow of excreta.

You can buy rabbit hutches from online websites as well as pet shops. The price of most hutches varies between $60 and $140. Generally, there are better discounts to be found online.
